2007 Governor's Award for Pollution
Prevention and Sustainable Practices
On October 9th, 2007, in a presentation
ceremony at the WA State Capitol Building, we were given this
award that represents our efforts and commitment to ongoing
sustainable practices. The Department of Ecology defines
sustainability as "meeting the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their
own needs." Vermiculture and our practices here at the
farm do just that. You can learn more about this award
here.

Certified Salmon Safe

Recently, our farm was also certified Salmon
Safe.
Salmon Safe works to keep urban and
agricultural watersheds clean enough for native salmon to spawn
and thrive.

Plant Pathology
Plants - especially trees and shrubs are
infected and killed by four fungi: Phytophtora,
Pythium, Fusarium, and Rhizoctonia. We
recently tested our Barefoot Soil Earthworm Castings for these,
and in what is a rare event in the composing/soil amendment
industry, evidence of the four pathogens was non detectable!
This means unlike other products you may buy on the market,
Barefoot Soil Earthworm Castings are safe to use for all of
your planting needs as well as for mulch.
Here
are the test results.

A quick note
on our Barefoot Soil Earthworm Castings and our Barefoot Soil
Deluxe Potting Mix:
The WSDA has approved and
registered our Barefoot Soil Earthworm Castings products for
certified organic crop growers.

The products that we develop using earthworm
castings are all about restoring or boosting the biology of
your soil so that this "living" soil can break down soil
nutrients and feed them to your plants' roots. Dr. Elaine
Ingham is a pioneer in this research and approach.

Did you know?
The vital importance of organic matter? If
humus is not continually replaced, the entire soil structure
and soil ecology falls apart. Without a healthy and numerous
ecology of microlife, soil becomes dead. With adequate organic
matter, soil usually becomes sweet smelling and pleasant and
functions like a creative organism. That’s largely because of
the many things accomplished by soil microlife. Remember that
during the gardening season, humus is being consumed by
microorganisms, the nutrients are used by the plants, and this
critical element must be replaced. Even ¼ inch can replace the
summer losses in a garden. Growing
vegetables West of the Cascades,
Steve Solomon And guess what is the perfect organic
material to renew your garden! Yes, it is Barefoot Soil
Earthworm Castings! Come see us, we have lots of it!

Did you know?
... Lignite, also known as leonardite, was named for Dr. A.
G. Leonard, North Dakota’s first state geologist, who was a
pioneer in the study of lignite deposits. Leonardite ore is a
soft, earthy, medium brown coal –like substance of organic
material that has decayed over millions of years. It has,
perhaps, the highest concentrations of both humic and fulvic
acids available. Humic acids improve the efficiency of
fertilizers, moisture retention and help to reduce nutrient
loss due to leaching. Biological activity is stimulated
resulting in root proliferation, plant growth, early and
uniform maturity thus improving the quality of plants, and
overall crop yields. (Search "leonardite+lignite" in your
favorite search engine for references.)
Yelm Earth has a full supply of
Leonardite/Lignite available.

Did
you know?
…the difference between Certified Organic and Organic? We
are certified with the WSDA and comply with strict
regulations and reporting necessary to maintain our
status. A simple “Organic” label does not tell you
anything about what is happening from seed quality used to
what happened in the fields before or during the growing
season, or how the produce is handled during and after
harvest. From the WSDA’s point of view, it is either
“Certified Organic” or it is not organic at all!

How Barefoot Soil got its name:
“The old people came literally to love the soil
and they sat or reclined on the ground with a feeling of being close to a mothering
power. It was good for the skin to touch the earth
and the old people liked to remove their
moccasins and walk with bare feet on the sacred earth.”
Luther Standing Bear, (1868-1939)
