A recent report in Mother Earth News concluded, “most of the eggs currently sold in supermarkets are nutritionally inferior to eggs produced by hens raised on pasture.” Moreover, “compared to official U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrient data for commercial eggs, eggs from hens raised on pasture may contain:
• 1⁄3 less cholesterol
• 1⁄4 less saturated fat
• 2⁄3 more vitamin A
• 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
• 3 times more vitamin E
• 7 times more beta carotene

The manufacturer of our BFS C-Gro, Arnie Moeller, spends a lot of time working with farmers and growers applying his product along with Teas brewed with our Barefoot Soil Earthworm Castings. Here is a summary of one of the experiences he had with one of his clients this year, an industry leading corporate tree fruit grower (1,000 acres of cherry & apple trees):
Note: CT is Actively Aerated Compost Tea (AACT) using our BFS Earthworm Castings. We call it Worm Tea.
THE COST: The applications were applied to: a block of young Honey Crisp (HC) apple trees; a block of Gala apple trees; and a block of past underachieving Granny Smith (GS) apple trees. Four (4) separate applications of CT totaling 80 gallons per acre ($120/acre cost) and one (1) application totaling 6 gallons of C-Gro ($120/acre cost) were applied for a combined cost of $240.00 per acre above past practices. The companies’ traditional fertilizer program of 50-70# per acre of N,P,K blend was applied as required.
PRODUCT PRICING: Apple prices are determined by size (ideal size per box) and color of apple and are specific for each variety. Top price paid for: HC is a count of 56 in a box; Gala is 72 in a box; and GS is 72 in box. Smaller sizes than this will result in a steep discount when the numbers moves toward 100 apples in a box.
THE RETURN ON INVESTMENT: All CT/C-Gro treated apples made top grade and produced 25% more bins per acre than the untreated block of the same variety, an average increase of $17,500 more per acre for all treated blocks. The HC are a higher priced apple and that return was $21,400 per acre. The surprising information was the earlier maturation and higher percentage of harvest on the first pick, which was over 40%. Some untreated blocks were near 20% on first pick.
· Arnie’s techniques are not certified organic, but they are organic in nature when compared to conventional farming. So I asked Arnie, “Why is it that your customers choose you rather than using more chemicals? Is it because their customers are demanding less use of chemicals and organically grown foods, or is it because they make more money selling this type of produce, or is it because of environmental consciousness?”
His answer, “None of these. It’s because they can’t get anything to grow anymore without using these techniques.”
“The world’s first conference on soil ecology was held in 1989. That was 20 years after we’d put men on the moon. For decades, we knew more about moon dust than we did about soil here on Earth. Today, soil science is one of the most fascinating studies. There is a quiet evolution of understanding underway.” Read more of the article in the OVS newsletter.
From the Bio-Organics Newsletter:
Reestablishing good populations of
beneficial soil organisms after years or decades of synthetic fertilization is
no overnight process. Residual overdoses of chemical elements, especially
Phosphorus, will have lingering disruptive effects on sensitive fungi and other
important microbial life in soil.
Why do growers, both farmers and home gardeners, put damaging amounts of fertilizer in their soil, much of which is not taken up by plants and washes away to end up in streams and underground water supplies? Well, the concept of total surface area (TSA) is one explanation.
Picture an individual asparagus root - long and rope-like. It is relatively large in diameter, but has very few small feeder roots. If you cut up a single cube into four smaller cubes, you greatly increase the TSA. Cut each of those four small cubes into 16 tiny cubes and the TSA is again greatly increased. The one large asparagus root is in actual contact with only a relatively small amount of soil and also has difficulty absorbing nutrients and moisture through its thick skin.
In nature, such thick-rooted plants depend on mycorrhizal fungi attaching to their roots and sending out millions of tiny root threads (hyphae) into the soil, which in effect tremendously increases the root's TSA. Mycorrhizae gives access to soil nutrients that would otherwise be far out of reach of the root itself, as well as adding super efficiency to the nutrient uptake.
When chemical fertilizers disrupt or destroy the soil's mycorrhizal fungi, the plant roots are essentially "on their own" as far as foraging ability is concerned, so relatively huge amounts of NPK must be added to the soil to produce good yields. Growers are then advised that they are dealing with "heavy feeders," a ridiculous notion. In time, most or all of the beneficial organisms in the soil are gone and the grower begins having trouble with salt build ups and soil compaction, as well as increased pressure from diseases and insects that attack plants grown in such soils.
Some time ago, I spoke to a tomato grower near Sacramento who was in the process of converting one of his fields to organic production. He said that it was only in the third growing season that the organic field finally started to show the full benefits of discontinuing chemical fertilization, with excellent yields from extra-healthy plants. He said that a nearby conventional field had substantial disease issues that third year, while the organic field had none.
I guess the point of all this is that decades of killing off valuable bio-life in crop or garden soils, and thereby cutting back on the TSA of roots in those lifeless soils, cannot be reversed in a single season. The disruptive presence of synthetic fertilizer takes time to dissipate, which means the full health of the soil will also take time to recover. But, for growers with the patience and resources to do so, converting their soil back to a natural biologically active low-input operation can have permanent benefits.
A reminder: Fall is a great time to add organic matter and minerals to garden soils.
Note: The use of properly brewed and applied worm teas w/BFS C=Gro can greatly reduce the time it takes to restore dead soils.
CNN aired a segment Earthworms Eat Toxic Waste describing how worms are being added to toxic soils, allowed to live there for some time (2 years), then removed. The toxins in the soil are absorbed into the worms’ flesh and bodies thus removing the toxins from the soil! Unfortunately, the worms’ deeds are rewarded by shortly thereafter being incinerated thus releasing the toxins into the air.
Yelm Earth also knows this trait to be true of worms because one of our customers, an analytical lab, purchases worms to absorb and concentrate chemically tainted soil for easier measurement and identification of toxins.
In the video clip it appears the worms used were Eisenia Fetida commonly known as the Red Wiggler, the same as the lab uses and the same as Yelm Earth uses to make our Barefoot Soil Earthworm Castings.
Overshadowed in the US by news of the Southern California wildfires and dwindling water supplies for Atlanta, the UN Environmental Program released its recent report from Beijing, Global Environment Outlook – 4, in early October. The report focuses on the state of the global environment, assesses the current state of global atmosphere, land, water and biodiversity, and describes what has changed over two decades. It salutes the real progress made in tackling some of the world’s pressing environmental problems.
“While there has been progress on some of the more straightforward problems for which solutions are proven, like the pollution of air and water, there remain what GEO-4′s authors call the persistent problems for which solutions are emerging - for example, climate change, deterioration of fisheries, and the extinction of species. On progress towards addressing these issues, the report says: “There are no major issues raised in Our Common Future for which the foreseeable trends are favourable.” And, this may threaten humanity’s very survival as well.”
The authors insist: “The objective is not to present a dark and gloomy scenario, but an urgent call for action.”

The UN Environmental Program considers vermicomposting (using worms to compost) an Environmentally Sound Technology that has the “potential for significantly improved environmental performance relative to other technologies.” Among the benefits:
· Very low noise, odor, leachate, or dust
· Minimal use of electricity, gas and other fossil fuels
· 90% less truck movements than traditional amendment composting
· 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emission over traditional landfill techniques
· And we also know the castings worms create are a superior soil amendment, tea starter, and fertilizer
There are now two cities in the US that vermicompost their municipal biosolids: Granville and West Hanover, PA.
Of particular interest to women:
1. A new study published in Environmental Health Perspectives is based on actual blood samples preserved from as long as 40 years ago, and the results are startling. It shows that if a female is exposed to DDT before puberty, she is five times as likely to get breast cancer as a woman who is exposed to DDT later in life. And virtually every female in the U.S. who was a child between 1945 and 1965, when DDT was widely used, is in a high-risk category. Read or listen to more.
2. KUOW’s Weekday program on 11/13/07 entitled Toys aren’t the only Thing That’s Toxic discussed the heightened awareness of lead in toy products – and much more. Of particular concern to those using cosmetics – primarily women – is the extraordinary level of lead in some lipsticks, for example. Everyone using cosmetics would do well to listen to the program archive (~1 hr). All would do well to listen to find the dangers and presence of bisphenol A and phthalates in our environment and bodies as well as what is or is not being done about it.
FRESHENERS FOUND TO CONTAIN TOXIC CHEMICAL
You may know that DDT has been outlawed for use in the US since the early 70’s for a variety of reasons. You may not know that the now former House Majority Leader, Tom DeLay, “considers DDT ‘safe as aspirin’” as reported in John F. Kennedy’s book, Crimes Against Nature (2004), p30. This was his attitude as he served in the house.
And here is another example:
CONGRESS AGRICULTURE CHAIR COLLIN PETERSON: PAYING MORE FOR ORGANIC OR LOCAL FOOD IS "DUMB"
From an MSNBC.com Financial Times Oct. 17, 2007 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21349573/
Collin Peterson (D-MN), chairman of the House of Representatives agricultural committee, says the farm sector that raises organic produce and grass-fed beef for local consumers needs little federal help. "It is growing, and it has nothing to do with the government, and that is good," he told the FT. "For whatever reason, people are willing to pay two or three times as much for something that says 'organic' or 'local'. Far be it from me to understand what that's about, but that's reality. And if people are dumb enough to pay that much then hallelujah."
QUOTE: "There's no conclusive scientific evidence that the amount of mercury one might get from a flu shot is linked with any neurological development outcome that's negative." --- Jeanne Santoli, deputy director of immunization services division for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
FACT: A typical flu
shot contains 50,000 parts per billion of mercury.
These are the attitudes of the people writing our laws and/or policies to protect our food and environment!!!! Please use your pen and/or your vote to persuade them otherwise or remove them from power positions.
